2015 AFTA’S Second Balik-Turo Project
Dr. Juanito C. Hingpis of the Association of Fil-AM Teachers of America, Inc. (AFTA) conducted the second leg of Balik-Turo 2015 in Manila at the Centro Escolar University (CEU) in Manila on 26 August 2015. The participants were teachers and administrators of different colleges in CEU, as well as students from the Science and Education fields. The first leg of AFTA’s Balik-Turo was conducted at the Philippine Normal University in Manila on 19 August 2015.
The Balik-Turo Project is an annual undertaking of the AFTA in cooperation with the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO), which involves overseas based Filipino teachers in sharing and exchanging valuable information, knowledge, experiences in difference areas of teaching with their counterparts in the Philippines.
Dr. Hingpis discussed the “Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Exploring Multiple Strategies for K-12 Curriculum.” He started by informing the participants of UDL’s history leading to the introduction of various strategies using this approach. He also shared his personal stories as a teacher, and the cultural difference between the educational systems of the Philippines and the United States. His lecture was followed by a group workshop on Science, Humanities, and Education. Afterwards, each group presented their outputs.
After the program, Dr. Hingpis was awarded a Certificate of Recognition by the university. He was also invited by the different heads of colleges to return to the university to again share his knowledge to a much bigger audience.
